The Ends Of The Earth LP on Broke Recordings

CD 1 – Mixed by the Autobots

CD 2 – Unmixed version

CD 3 – The Best Of Broke

This compilation is a monster of a selection from the Broke Recordings label, offering a selection of breakbeat carnage from the U.K.’s and New Zealand’s highest ranking DJ’s and producers of the genre. Broke Recording has always had its own unique sound in the genre, and here we have the best of it, packaged nicely into a DJ friendly and artistic release.

CD 1 – Mixed by the Autobots

As the head honchos of the label it is only right they take on the role as mixers of their own children. A highly listenable compilation, from the early filth of ‘Apocalypse’ applying fresh vocals over the top, through to funk driven ‘Fresh Air’ by Unbalanced Jack featuring Miss Bels, remixed by Affinity. By the time we reach track 16, it is time for some drum and bass before we depart. For followers of the Broke legacy this is a must have record offering all the best releases, and never giving up on the sound which makes it a wholly unique experience.

As a fan of the Broke releases I wasn’t disappointed, too much, the sound is almost over played, may be my ears have become too accustomed to the sound, but it is a great selection, and often a familiar style just needs a bit of something different slotted in between.

CD 2 offers 11 of the 19 tracks unmixed for the DJ’s pleasure, and in my opinion with the combination of CD 3 in your CD wallet, you pretty much have the best releases all in one well-presented package.

Overall a good mix and good selection, if you like the Broke releases this is not to be missed.

Sound of Habib - Karton/Digitalis 'Mugstar' / 'Dealing with it'

A:   Mugstar – Karton

A1: Mugstar - Digitalis remix

B:   Dealing With It – Digitalis

B1: Dealing With It – Karton remix

  Mugstar

From the outset there is definitely a whiff of talent exuding from this release, I’m not sure what it is but every time this track pops up on my mp3 player I think ‘yeah this is good’.

The original kicks off with some crisp beats and a brass element that continues throughout. The track slowly builds on this and progresses with an evolving filtered vocal ‘Mugstar, mugstar, mugstar…’ As the tune brings in the rest of the elements there is a clear use of early disco sounds making this into a funky number. The bass is complementry to the track but doesn’t do It does get a bit repetitive however it is well mixed and has a nice flow and groove to it. A good filler, but may be not floor killer.

3/5

 Mugstar – Digitalis remix

The remix is certainly my favourite of the two, Digitalis demonstrates a darker atmosphere, with an almost ‘Far Too Loud’ approach. Beats are crisp and tasty, accompanied with a large dollop of fresh bass squelch. The vocal has been more creatively manipulated, and twisted up into something more interesting than its predecessor. Over all, this remix has more impact and variety to keep the listener interested, the original is good, but just doesn’t quite attain the edge of the remix.

4/5

  Dealing With It

The second instalment on this release is again evidence of the darkness Digitalis put into their work. The track is well produced with familiar elements and is a hard hitter. The bass crunches and squelches through nicely, while the vocal fills in the gaps, there is a lot going on without being too cluttered.  The beats are solid crisp and roll the track through nicely.

4/5

Dealing With It – Karton remix

Kartons mix on here is a filthy enlightenment, entertaining and interesting. The track itself is a grinder, offering solidity and a nice rework of the original, giving it a different light and a brighter feel. It bounces rather than beats, and will have the dance floor moving.

Napt: ‘Gotta’ Have More Cowbell’ / ‘Heart Of Stone’ Out on Funkatech June 9th 2008

A: ‘Gotta’ Have More Cowbell’

This is a sure groover, with a welcome change in sound to previous releases and a solid level of funk, only found on Napt releases. Pads and claps draw us into what is to be a crisp production and humorous samples from Christopher Walken. Driving bass build-ups, bouncing beats, delayed synth hits, it’s all here, the structure is varied, and interesting, coming back to what is familiar to keep the listener hooked. This is a great tune, and will have the dance floors bouncing early on; there are plenty of cowbells too so you won’t be disappointed.

4/5

B: ‘Heart of Stone’

The B-side exudes Napt-ness; their signature beats and breaks seething through to give us a wealth of interesting elements. Again the groove is provoking head movement in time with the beats, which is a good sign it will do some positive damage on the dance floor. Building up into a grinding force of techy synths and melodic fuzz, this is quite a roller coaster of a ride, and it certainly holds atmosphere and sits well as the B-side, warming up the punters for more to come, of which Napt are more than capable of fulfilling. Vocal samples bouncing with the beats are a nice touch, giving it a pleasant hook, but not over doing it. This is another good tune allowing the DJ to build up the set with some spice.

Ils: Hate Is An Illness / Lone Riders – May/June 2008  Botchit & Scarper

1) 'Hate Is An Illness' NAPT RMX

2) 'Lone Riders' DEF inc RMX

3) 'Hate Is An Illness' Orig

4) 'Lone Riders' Orig

If you are a fan of breaks, then you would of heard of Ils, a producer, and DJ on the scene of several years, his work has been rated first class within the scene and continues to pleasure our ears with top rated productions.

'Hate Is An Illness' NAPT RMX

Signature Napt beats kick this track off, with an eerie pad to get us in the mood, or does it? We then trail into a slow gentle vocal, ‘aint nobody’, phattened up by a thick slice of Napt bass. At first listen you may be forgiven to utter the word ‘cheese’ but it is far from it, solid beats bass and tension building. There is a deepness that filters through, which is strong evidence of the Ils touch. Once fully settled into the groove the essence of Napt shines through beautifully and you are sure to get the urge to bounce around. The production is crisp and warm and both ends of the track (as expected) fulfil the DJs’ needs. This is overall all a good bouncing track that will have the punters smiling on the dance floors.

The original offers an old skool vocal pitch, that again, sits well with the rest of the track. Offering atmosphere and to an extent nostalgia, it is hard to pigeonhole this work, it just is, and what it is, is good.

4/5

'Lone Riders' DEF inc RMX

A darker tone to the second track, again a smooth vocal and that deep feel that gives away the Ils signature. Def Inc has really given this already outstanding track an edge as only they know how. Applying extra percussion edgier beats and an overall sense of tension. The remix and the original hold something special, and there is no denying a good track when you hear one, this is as breakbeat should be, dark and powerful, with a sense of timelessness. Certainly not for peak time, but then again to drop this at peak time would certainly change the journeys direction.

The original version exudes even more atmosphere, which gently carries you through dark streets to something that really does give you a feeling of solidarity.
