DJ MUTINY a) ‘SINGIN’ THE BLUES’ aa) ‘MOVE’ Label: Sub Frequency Funk
I have enjoyed DJ Mutiny’s previous outings with tunes like ‘Daily Operation’ and ‘No Compromise’ as a clear indication of good collaboration work and the ‘Concrete Soul’ series as a solo trip. ‘Singin’ the Blues’ is another nice example of funky breaks with an edge. Kicking in with some brass, hats, clapping and vocal ‘oooooohing’ into the ‘I’m Singing the Blues’ first vocal section, no doubt taken from one of the numerous versions of the original song, the crackle of the record has been left in, which is a nice touch, giving a sense of old, then slaps in with some crisp beats from the future. This funk driven from the eighties but minus the cheese will no doubt prove popular on the dance floors as a funky mover.
The AA side of this release ‘Move’ has more ‘ooooooooing’ but this time over a darker synth sound and the beats certainly do get you moving. As the tune progresses it feels good, there are enough elements going on to satisfy all, and the breakdown giving a hint of something ethnic. The female vocal sounds a bit like a steam train sounding its horn in the night and adds to the atmosphere. The final crash is a little abrupt, and leaves you wondering what happened, but this is a good all round bit of bouncing breaks and I would certainly recommend you bouncing out to buy it.
